New Rod!!!

Finally got round to going to try out a new rod, I have decided I need 2 purely from a convenience point of view as I am extremely lazy and on several occaisions over the last season I was thinking that I should change lines at various points in the day but on a significant number of those occasions I did not bother as the thought of changing back after 1/2 an hour just seemed too much hassle.

I will never know whether or not that cost me fish but I think having 2 rods set up will encourage me to swap more often

I absolutley love my 10ft #7 Vision Onki but am looking I think for a rod with a bit more grunt for sinking line work, the only 10ft#7 I did not test that was in my price range (anything up to around £600) when purchasing the Onki was as it happens the Vision Stillmaniac, so having confirmed they had one in stock went to Sprotfish to give it a whirl

Has taken me this long to back to testing a new rod mainly due to the fact that the wind has been a bit ridiculous over the last couple of weeks whenever I have been able to go and do not want to repeat my previous experience of trying to test in a gale

Took my Onki and a DI7 line for the test.

As well as the 10ft #7 also tried the 9'9"#7

Started with the 10' and it cast a lovely long line with minimal effort from me, heavier and a bit stiffer thn the Onki but that is sort of what I want so all good so far

Next went back to the Onki to remind myself of what it wa like (not been out of the tube since October) and it is for me a beuatiful rod to cast, slightly surprised that it put out a line almost as well as the Stillmaniac and again with very little effort.

Tried the 9'9" next and again a lovely rod to cast and very similar to the Onki for me although possibly a bit stiffer

Went round them all again and honestly there was very little in it for me (this may be because of my limitations as a caster) so now have a tricky decision to make, do I spend the extra £80'ish on the Stillmaniac 10' or do I buy another Onki, ruled out the 9'9" as too similar to the Onki to justify the extra.

Decided on the 10' Stillmaniac as I do want a rod with a bit more grunt so shelled out the money and went home a happy man - just need to find the time to get on the water to see how it actually fishes!!

Rod Testing

Bought the new Onki last July and generally really really pleased with it. Would like to try the Stillmaniac also by Vision as I am wondering whether it has a bit more oomph for dealing with heavy sinking lines, which I am using less but still come out at some stage on most trips Sportfish Reading have one in that I can try out so off there to give it a cast alongside my current Onki. Not a good day for testing rods - gusts of over 35mph meant that any comparison was meaningless, nice rod though and definately stiffer and heavier than the Onki Will need to come back on a less windy day to give it a proper test as I cannot justify spending £400+ without a decent test

Beyond Excited

Firsttrip of the new season planned for Saturday 9th at Draycote and I really can't wait. I have been a nightmare for the last 3 days checking my gear (mostly new so no need) looking through flies to try and decide the first cast, preparing the leaders with 2 droppers (10lb and 8lb) and generally just checking again and again that everything is in order. Last trip to Draycote was a really good day and turned out to be my best days reservoir fishing ever so that has set a pretty high bar but to be honest just getting a day out on the water will be enough although I will be somewhat disappointed to not catch anything Tickets all paid for, alarm set for 05:30 and sandwiches made😁 roll on tomorrow

Almost the New Season

New season kicks off at Draycote on the 1st and Eyebrook on the 3rd, not sure I'll be able to get to either on the first weekend but in my mind have pencilled in the 2nd weekend of March for my first trip of 2023. This year am looking to go a couple of times a month but this really will be weather dependant as I have no wish to be out on the water in 20 mile an hour winds, I will also be slightly favouring Eyebrook over Draycote as it has no sailing boats which can get quite irritating on Draycote (I am sure they find the anglers equally irritating!) I will also try and fit in at least a couple of trips to LLyn Brenig once the weather has warmed up. Setup has changed a bit since the start of last season, I then had one large bag (Wychwood Flow Extremis) with a 50 litre capacity, this got pretty heavy by the time all reels, flies, food, liquid etc were loaded in and with the expansion of the number of lines and flyboxes I now have just having them all in a large compartment wasn'...
