Draycote 23/10/2021 - The Day

The day finally arrived, up early, made a flask of coffee (remembering the distinct lack of coffee from last time) and got there just before 8:30

D already there so quick coffee, bought ticket and loaded up boat, out on the water by 8:45

All the talk in the shop had been of sinking lines and that is what D started with (DI 3), I went with my original intention of floater with my intended 3 flies

Could not have worked out better , less than 1/2 an hour in and first fish in the boat to the booby on the middle dropper, hurrah!!

Lost another 2 in quick succession and D changed to floater with 10ft sink tip, booby on point and top dropper.

D soon started hitting fish and had a couple of occasions where he had 2 on (one on each Booby) I on the other hand had gone quiet, D boated 4 in quick succession (released 2).

Thought to myself that if the boobies were so popular then maybe I should change, still needed some weight on it I thought so:-

Point - Candy Floss Booby

Middle - Pink Lure with Metal 'Eyes'

Top - Candy Floss Booby

Soon into another fish but somewhat surprisingly was to the pink lure not either of the Boobies

Finished the drift without any more excitement and decided to give Rainbow Corner a go as all other boats were basically drifting along the dam in the direction of J to T buoy

On our way to Rainbow Corner decided to chaneg flies a bit (not comfortable with 2 Boobies and a lure) and this is where I had a brain fade for a while

Decided on

Point - Pink Lure

Middle - Red Cruncher

Top Candy Booby

Started fishing and very soon realised that having a big metal eyed lure and a nymph like fly on the same cast did not work for me, I always felt that at least one of the flies was not fishing correctly no matter what the retrieval was

Nothing happening for either of us as we mooched around A and C buoy so decided that if I wanted depth to the flies needed to change lines rather than put on combinations of flies I was uncomfortable with.

Put on a DI 3 and changed the fly combination to

Point - Orange FAB

Middle - Red Cruncher

Top - Candy Booby

Almost immediate effect, quickly hooked a fish around B Buoy, which I managed to land and then another from around C which I lost, both on the FAB

Nothing happening for D and he quite fancied going back to near the dam so with 4 in the bag I was more than happy to agree

Things just carried on for me, very soon into another fish and soon had 6 in the bag and debarbed my hooks to enable easier release

D in the meantime had switched to a DI 3 as well but not getting anything, chucked him one of the orange FAB's and he was almost immediately into a fish.

So full bag reached by mid afternoon.

D now starting to catch fish very regularly whereas me not so much, although was still hooking and losing a few

Later both of us getting fish near the surface to both the FAB and the Boobies and possibly should have switched lines again however very content with just plodding along, had a full bag and still getting regular (ish) fish, although losing as many as I landed.

Landed my last fish approx 17:00 which resulted in the mother of all tangles on my cast, decided not to bother trying to untangle it and couldn't be bothered to tie on another one so I just sat and waited for D.

Called it a day soon after and headed back, D had landed 14 me 10 and it was without a doubt the most productive days rservoir fishing I had ever had

Heading into the Winter in very good spirits

Rod Testing

Bought the new Onki last July and generally really really pleased with it. Would like to try the Stillmaniac also by Vision as I am wondering whether it has a bit more oomph for dealing with heavy sinking lines, which I am using less but still come out at some stage on most trips Sportfish Reading have one in that I can try out so off there to give it a cast alongside my current Onki. Not a good day for testing rods - gusts of over 35mph meant that any comparison was meaningless, nice rod though and definately stiffer and heavier than the Onki Will need to come back on a less windy day to give it a proper test as I cannot justify spending £400+ without a decent test

Beyond Excited

Firsttrip of the new season planned for Saturday 9th at Draycote and I really can't wait. I have been a nightmare for the last 3 days checking my gear (mostly new so no need) looking through flies to try and decide the first cast, preparing the leaders with 2 droppers (10lb and 8lb) and generally just checking again and again that everything is in order. Last trip to Draycote was a really good day and turned out to be my best days reservoir fishing ever so that has set a pretty high bar but to be honest just getting a day out on the water will be enough although I will be somewhat disappointed to not catch anything Tickets all paid for, alarm set for 05:30 and sandwiches made😁 roll on tomorrow

Almost the New Season

New season kicks off at Draycote on the 1st and Eyebrook on the 3rd, not sure I'll be able to get to either on the first weekend but in my mind have pencilled in the 2nd weekend of March for my first trip of 2023. This year am looking to go a couple of times a month but this really will be weather dependant as I have no wish to be out on the water in 20 mile an hour winds, I will also be slightly favouring Eyebrook over Draycote as it has no sailing boats which can get quite irritating on Draycote (I am sure they find the anglers equally irritating!) I will also try and fit in at least a couple of trips to LLyn Brenig once the weather has warmed up. Setup has changed a bit since the start of last season, I then had one large bag (Wychwood Flow Extremis) with a 50 litre capacity, this got pretty heavy by the time all reels, flies, food, liquid etc were loaded in and with the expansion of the number of lines and flyboxes I now have just having them all in a large compartment wasn'...
