Brenig 18 June 2021

At last the day arrived, huge anticipation, some nervousness (would I still be able to cast a fly line) and massive excitement just being fishing again.

Had driven up to my mums the previous evening and so arrived at the Brenig at 08:00 and went to the café, couple of bacon rolls and coffee got the day off to a good start

Realised had forgotten clippers so went to the shop and bought a pair

Only been fishing on a boat once before (30 years ago) and so didn’t realise I needed a life jacket but fortunately D had bought a spare (he had also bought a cushion which he leant me, about which more later)

D had however spent the last 30 years fishing reservoirs in boats and so had all the necessary equipment.

Piled everything into the boat, D in the driving seat me up front and set off where D had been successful a couple of weeks before and started to fish

Me = Single Booby and Intermediate Line

D = Sink tip 10ft and 2 droppers with Booby on point

Soon realised I had absolutely no idea how to fish these flies

My previous experience of reservoir fishing was limited to fishing off the bank with largely sea trout flies (bloody butcher, dunkeld), traditional nymphs (hares ear, pheasant tail) or lures (muddlers), Boobies had not been invented but from the little I had read a slow retrieve should do the trick

Nothing much happening for the first hour or so but then D got one on the Booby just after the flies hit the water, I switched to a floating line to see whether having the flies higher in the water worked for me (it didn’t).

Mooched around various areas until we found a drift near the Osprey nest where D was fairly quickly into a fish (same Booby).

Went back along that same drift 6 -7 times and D finished with 8 fish whilst I had not one sniff even though I was fishing the same booby he was catching all of his on

Back to the cushion that D had so kindly bought with him, whilst it was without a doubt more comfortable than sitting on the wooden boat seat the fact that it had no back support made for an increasingly uncomfortable day, just having a cushion is definitely a young persons option

Called it a day at 16:30 and boy am I going to ache tomorrow!!

Even though I caught precisely nothing it was fantastic to be back on the water and I had an immensely enjoyable day

Lessons Learnt

·       DO NOT go boat fishing again without a seat with proper back support

·       Need to have a think about why D had 8 fish (and a number lost) whereas I had not one sniff

Rod Testing

Bought the new Onki last July and generally really really pleased with it. Would like to try the Stillmaniac also by Vision as I am wondering whether it has a bit more oomph for dealing with heavy sinking lines, which I am using less but still come out at some stage on most trips Sportfish Reading have one in that I can try out so off there to give it a cast alongside my current Onki. Not a good day for testing rods - gusts of over 35mph meant that any comparison was meaningless, nice rod though and definately stiffer and heavier than the Onki Will need to come back on a less windy day to give it a proper test as I cannot justify spending £400+ without a decent test

Beyond Excited

Firsttrip of the new season planned for Saturday 9th at Draycote and I really can't wait. I have been a nightmare for the last 3 days checking my gear (mostly new so no need) looking through flies to try and decide the first cast, preparing the leaders with 2 droppers (10lb and 8lb) and generally just checking again and again that everything is in order. Last trip to Draycote was a really good day and turned out to be my best days reservoir fishing ever so that has set a pretty high bar but to be honest just getting a day out on the water will be enough although I will be somewhat disappointed to not catch anything Tickets all paid for, alarm set for 05:30 and sandwiches made😁 roll on tomorrow

Almost the New Season

New season kicks off at Draycote on the 1st and Eyebrook on the 3rd, not sure I'll be able to get to either on the first weekend but in my mind have pencilled in the 2nd weekend of March for my first trip of 2023. This year am looking to go a couple of times a month but this really will be weather dependant as I have no wish to be out on the water in 20 mile an hour winds, I will also be slightly favouring Eyebrook over Draycote as it has no sailing boats which can get quite irritating on Draycote (I am sure they find the anglers equally irritating!) I will also try and fit in at least a couple of trips to LLyn Brenig once the weather has warmed up. Setup has changed a bit since the start of last season, I then had one large bag (Wychwood Flow Extremis) with a 50 litre capacity, this got pretty heavy by the time all reels, flies, food, liquid etc were loaded in and with the expansion of the number of lines and flyboxes I now have just having them all in a large compartment wasn'...
